Master of None
In the white collar world I was many things – not just a graphic designer and data analyst, but also a manager of advertising campaigns, e-commerce storefronts, and various marketing solutions.
One thing I was not – a copywriter.
I graduated college in the age of startups where everyone needed to be everything all at once. During my tenure, I probably worked the jobs of 20 different people, but I could never conjure the concise wording necessary to get someone to take out their credit card, and buy something they didn't need. I found myself reading and re-reading my work to the brink of madness.
When I turned in the work for approval before going live, I would get a sheet scribbled in red, mostly from the duplication of words like "the" followed by "the". The more time I spent trying to catch those mistakes, the further I fell behind in other work.
"Master of None" is a simple expression of that time, when I was pushed to the brink, without a healthy form of release – and so I turned back to art. And I left my job. This piece marks a pivotal point in my life, and is a reminder that money and security are not worth the loss of time, friends, and family to promote a company you care nothing about.
